Southwest Developmental Services, Inc. (SDSI) is a private not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) corporation originally formed in 1974. SDSI is the Community Developmental Disability Organization (CDDO) for 18 counties in Central and Southwest Kansas. CDDOs are the single point of entry for an individual or family to obtain services through the Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) system in the State of Kansas. Since 1999 SDSI has operated as a CDDO which does not provide direct services. SDSI is one of only 6 CDDOs out of 27 statewide that does not provide direct services.
Prior to July 1, 2004 SDSI was the CDDO for 13 counties in Southwest Kansas. On July 1, 2004 SDSI expanded its CDDO area to include these 5 additional counties in Central Kansas: Barton, Pawnee, Rice, Rush, and Stafford. Currently we have offices in Garden City and Great Bend to serve these 18 counties. SDSI contracts with each county in its service area to provide CDDO services. SDSI has a total of 10 staff, 7 in Garden City and 3 in Great Bend.
SDSI performs annual assessments of all individuals receiving services. Each year SDSI informs all persons receiving services, or their guardian, of their individual rights within the I/DD system. SDSI monitors services to ensure quality services are provided. SDSI has established and facilitates local Council of Community Members who make suggestions and recommendations to the governing board of the CDDO. SDSI also has established a dispute resolution process for individuals receiving services, guardians, and providers to resolve service issues.
SDSI contracts with 24 community service providers who provide an array of services to individuals in Central and Southwest Kansas. These services include day, residential, case management, in-home supports and payroll billing. These community service providers include 2 large multi-state corporations, a local not-for-profit organization, many medium sized locally owned businesses and several individuals providing services to 1 or 2 individuals. SDSI also contracts with 17 companies who provide payroll billing services only. SDSI currently has a total of 1,094 eligible individuals in our service area.
SDSI also owns and manages HUD-financed housing in Garden City and Liberal. The housing currently has 121 tenants in 11 group homes and an assortment of apartment settings. Rent assistance from HUD on all of these projects makes clean, affordable housing available to the individuals in our system.
