WHAT THEY'RE DOING AFFECTS YOU
More than 50 people joined area legislators to discuss issues that
matter. Senator Steve Morris, Representative Jeff Whitham, and
Representative Gary Hayzlett were on hand to provide updates on the
session's #1 issue: a reliable and consistent set of rules that
businesses can trust as they conduct business, and as they try to expand
their businesses in this state. To many of us that translates
specifically to Sunflower Electric and the critical expansion of the
Holcomb facility. This issue is even bigger than Sunflower's permit, as
many of our Kansas businesses could be negatively affected if state
agencies are allowed to create their own rules.
Legislators also provided information about other key issues. Like
immigration. Representative Gary Hayzlett is concerned that
"immigration laws are not in tune with economic reality", and "if every
state tries to do their own thing regarding immigration it's a recipe
for chaos."
Tax issues and their impact on businesses, transportation funding,
recommendations from the Kansas Health Policy Authority, and the state's
overall budget were other topics discussed.
The next Legislative Coffee is scheduled for March 22nd at 10:00 a.m. at
the Wheat Lands Convention Center. The Coffees are sponsored by the
Chamber's Government Affairs Committee with refreshments provided by AT
& T.
