Garden City Public Schools Events Calendar For January 2008

Garden City Public Schools issues this calendar of events each month to assist the media and community in keeping track of events taking place at the schools. This calendar may not include all events.

The January Word of the Month is RESPECT: Students will respect school and district property and the property of others.

Parent tip on bullying: Involve your child in family activities to do at home or in the community that will support your child's emotional, behavioral and academic development. Spend more positive time with your child. Talk about his/her feelings.

Tuesday, January 1

Garden City Public Schools offices and schools are closed for the holiday. Happy New Year!

Wednesday, January 2

The offices will be open at Garden City Public Schools, but classes are still out for the winter break. Classes will resume Tuesday, January 8, 2008.

Monday, January 7

Garden City Public Schools faculty will have a workday to get prepared for classes to resume on Tuesday, January 8, 2008.

Tuesday, January 8

School is back in session for Garden City Public Schools.

Monday, January 14

There will be a Board of Education meeting at 6:00 p.m. in the Educational Support Center Boardroom, 1205 Fleming.

Friday, January 18

Garden City High School will be hosting the state debate tournament. There will be no school for Garden City High School. There will also be no school at Abe Hubert and Kenneth Henderson Middle Schools to help support the tournament. Tournament participants will use the middle schools. School will be back in session for all schools on Monday, January 21.

The Early Childhood Development Department will hold a free childhood screening clinic for children 3 to 5 years of age. Please call 276-5149 to set up an appointment for the screening clinic. If you are unable to keep an appointment, the district asks that you call the Early Childhood Development Department at 271-8847.

Saturday, January 19

The first meeting between the negotiating teams of the Garden City Educators' Association and the Board of Education of Garden City Public Schools U.S.D. 457 will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Boardroom of the Educational Support Center Building, 1205 Fleming, Garden City, Kansas. Topics to be discussed are: Interest Based Bargaining training and exchange of letters.

Tuesday, January 22

Jennie Wilson Elementary School will hold a Family Math Night starting at 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday, January 29

Garden City High School will stage a jazz band concert in Clifford Hope Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. The concert is open to the public with free admission.

Thursday, January 29

Bernadine Sitts Intermediate Center will hold a Literacy Night starting at 6:00 p.m.
